SNOWPOCOLYPSE 2008

Seattle is stuck in a Winter Wonderland...first we wish for snow, then after a few days of not getting into work, we wish for clear roads. Well, after several days stuck at home, I made it in to the Gallery today - by way of a three hour commute walking through snow and then waiting for and riding a Metro bus. Not too many folks out and about downtown, especially for the limited hours left for holiday shopping, but I'm here and will be tomorrow (Wednesday December 24) until 3pm. If it dumps snow again, I'm crossing my fingers - call if you plan to stop by tomorrow! We'll be closed December 25 - 29.

So, what's new? Mark Calderon, Paul Horiuchi, Jacob Lawrence:

INVENTORY UPDATE

NOVEMBER 2008
Just a few new additions to our resale inventory - look for them to appear on the website this week:

GUY ANDERSON
A color woodcut, framed in metal leafed wood and a large-scale, classic painting with the perfect Anderson motifs.

ROGER SHIMOMURA
An erotic color silkscreen and an acrylic on canvas from his "A Jap's a Jap" suite of paintings. A bit about this series:
"The artist's collection of stereotypical W.W.II depictions of Japanese males as slant-eyed, buck-toothed, yellow-skinned demons, served as inspiration for the Jap's A Jap series. Combining these facial features with the bodies of typically dressed Americans in typical social situations, these paintings represent a reality for many Asian Americans - that not a day goes by when they are not, in some way, reminded how they are perceived as being different from the people around them. The term, "a Jap's a Jap" is a direct quote from 1941 by General Dewitt, commander of the Western Defense Command, who publicly expressed his support for the placement of all Japanese Americans in concentration camps during the war." - Greg Kucera Gallery

CHARLES KRAFFT
A playful painting on canvas

JOHN FORD
A set of two paintings from this student of Mark Tobey. These come from the personal collection of Mark Tobey.

GALEN GARWOOD
A colorful, abstract painting in a great natural wood frame

T. MICHAEL GARIDNER
A painting with all Gardiner's classic style - this image was reproduced in the New Yorker, 1996

HARRY BERTOIA
A rare Sonambient sound sculpture that makes a "long play" chiming sound. Hear it on our website. Although best known for his modern chair designs in the 1950s, this artist's sound sculpture is rarely seen in Seattle. We are honored to be able to display this amazing work.

JAMES CASTLE
A wonderful interpretation of the "Jesus wall" in the farm's main residence. See the current show of his work at Greg Kucera Gallery through December 24, 2008. You can also see more by this artist at a Castle retrospective exhibition currently on view through January 4, 2009 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This amazing show will travel to the Art Institute of Chicago and the Berkeley Art Museum, through 2009.

End of Summer Update

It's been a summer of ups and downs as far as traffic, but overall, a good season. We were happy to place several works to the new Four Season's Hotel currently being built across from the Seattle Art Museum. We also sold a few significant works, which make us happy, indeed. One of my favorite items to arrive is a beautiful, modern "apple vase" (1959) by Ingeborg Lundin...great for that mid-century home or office! If you haven't checked the website lately, you're missing out on several new works in inventory - a few are seen below...
